Inheritance of the throne could be through matriarchal line, or not. Egyptologists argue about this subject for there is archeological data to support both sides.

All of the women who held power in Egypt’s distant past did so after becoming widows of Pharaoh. They were, it is believed, of royal blood and produced no successor or the heir was too young to ascend to the throne. Furthermore, an heir by another of Pharaohs wives’ or relatives or a usurper could derail the ascendancy of the widow to the throne. Little is known of the women, in some cases not even their names for in they are only referred to as the widow of such and such Pharaoh.
