The first competitive game played by Georgia after independence was a 1-0 defeat at home to another former member of the USSR, Moldova, as part of the qualifying tournament for Euro 96. Georgia went on to enjoy mixed results, winning five and losing five of their ten matches. The highlight was a 5-0 home victory over Wales, whom they also beat in Cardiff. The campaign ended disappointingly however, with another defeat to Moldova. Despite this Georgia finished third in the group, albeit some distance behind Germany and Bulgaria, who qualified.
However, Georgia did not have long to wait for revenge over Moldova, as the two sides were once again drawn together in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup, and this time the Georgians came out on top, winning both fixtures. Georgia also managed a fine 3-0 victory over Poland, and gained an unexpected point with a 0-0 draw against Italy, but these results were not enough to challenge England and Italy who occupied the top two places in the table.
These promising results were continued into the start of the qualification process for Euro 2000, as Georgia beat Albania 1-0 in their opening match. That was as good as things got for the Georgians however, as they failed to win any of their remaining nine matches. Draws at home to Slovenia and another former Soviet state, Latvia were all they had to show for their efforts.
